Apple invention adjusts display brightness according to on-screen content



A patent discovered on Tuesday outlines a system in which displays like the iPhone and iPad's Retina panels are automatically dimmed based on what type of content is showing on screen, allowing for portable devices to conserve precious energy.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office awarded Apple's patent No. 8,358,273 for a "Portable media device with power-managed display," which describes a unique method of adjusting the intensity (brightness) of a device's screen depending on what is being displayed. 

Other techniques like photosensor-based display controls have been in use for years, but Apple's method goes further by managing display brightness based on the monitoring of actual content. Currently, devices may auto-dim in dark-lit rooms or when they haven't been used for a set amount of time. With the '273 patent, both the type and characteristics of displayed content is taken into consideration, allowing for further refinement of auto-dimming procedures that could translate to power savings. 

The method relies on identifying the type of content being displayed and setting an output intensity for the display device based on either a predetermined configuration or a set of user preferences. Content types are described as images, photos or video, among others. 

After determining what type of content is on a device's screen, the system then takes into account the characteristics of said content. For example, if a light image is being displayed, the brightness may be lowered. This process becomes more complex for video content, which must be monitored frame by frame and weighted by metrics like contrast, darkness, lightness and color. In some embodiments, the system may sample at stepped intervals like every 10 frames to keep brightness consistent throughout viewing. 

The management system offers users more control over screen auto-dimming by allowing a set of preferences to override automatic controls. An example user-configurable setting could be "Brightness Mode," which would act much like a modern HDTV to provide levels of brightness referenced by the control module.

It is unclear how much processing power the system would require, though there are various embodiments that leverage software, hardware or a combination of the two to achieve the desired results.

Recall an Email In Gmail

It has happened to many of us and many of the time where after sending an email we regret that “Why did I send that email” and we wish as if I could get back that email. This type of incident is very common as most of the time we send the email to a wrong person. If you are using MS Outlook there is a functionality to recall the by mistakenly send email, that means if the recipient has not read the e-mail yet then you can call the email back so that the recipient won’t be able to read the email.
But think if you are using Gmail then how to recall an email? So for that there is a very nice solution provided by Gmail Lab called “Undo Send”. This feature works like the recall email in outlook.

So how do you recall an email in Gmail?
If you have enabled the Undo Send feature for your Gmail account, then Gmail will show you a yellow notification box with an Undo button every time you send an email. Just click on that Undo button and your job is done, the email is recalled.

To enable recall feature in Gmail you need to enable the Undo Send in Gmail labs. To enable it log in to your gmail and click on the geared icon and then click on Labs. Search for the Undo Send and enable it. Now you have enabled the recall feature in Gmail.

High-tech gym floor has LED lights rather painted stripes



Think back to your days in elementary or middle school when you had to go to PE in a gym that was used for multiple sports. Odds are your gym had more than the normal lines for basketball court running across it, making things very confusing if you are new to the sport or just really bad at it. Most of the school gyms have lines for traditional full-size basketball court, and lines running across the middle for basketball courts on each side of the normal court.

A high-tech gym installed by a German company called ABS Systembau GMBH ditches those painted lines on traditional wooden gym floors and replaces them with glowing strips of LED light that remind me a lot of Tron. This fancy gym floor is installed in a school gym in Germany. The fancy lighting system allows the gym to be used for basketball, tennis, badminton, or other activities that are played in your average school gym.
The system is called the ABS Glassfloor. The glass flooring material uses a ceramic treatment to reach a level of elasticity and friction is very similar to that the wood floor offers. The company that produces the system also promises that it performs a “bounce test” to be sure that the basketball bounces at the same height on their fancy flooring as it would on a wood floor.
The glass material used in the floor is also dulled to reduce reflection suppliers are distracted. The company says that its glass flooring is about as reflective as a typical marble surface. The treatment also helps to hide scratches that are caused during play and the floor is available in any color. Another interesting aspect the flooring is that the color can be changed after installation. The glass floor is supported by a lightweight aluminum frame that also houses the LED lighting. Perhaps the most interesting thing about this floor is that it can be combined with sensors that will illuminate precisely where the ball landed or where a player’s foot was to determine if they went out of bounds.

Sony launches full-HD 10.1 inch Xperia Tablet Z



On the heels of the recently launched Xperia flagship smartphones, Sony has announced the Xperia Tablet Z for the Japanese market. The new 10.1-inch tablet sticks to the seamless design language of the Xperia Z, foregoing the grippy back and folded-magazine look of Sony's previous tablets for a more monolithic aesthetic.

The Tablet Z's 10.1-inch LCD TFT display will push a resolution of 1920 x 1200 with Sony's second-generation Mobile Bravia Engine working to enhance the quality of images and video. Running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean at launch with Sony's now-familiar light skin on top, the tablet is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4 Pro processor clocked at 1.5GHz and has 2GB of RAM just like the Xperia Z phone; the tablet boasts 32GB of storage with an SD card expansion slot. The company has not announced whether the device will be updated to Android 4.2, which brings multi-user support to tablets.

Also, like its smartphone sibling, the Tablet Z carries the IP57 certification, which makes it waterproof up to one metre, as well as making it impervious to dust. Unlike other tablet makers, Sony hasn't skimped on the rear camera for the Tablet Z. It has included its flagship camera sensor, an 8.1 megapixel Exmor R on the back and a 2.2 megapixel front-facing camera, both capable of doing 1080p video. However, it is not clear whether this sensor enables HDR mode for video recording a la the Exmor RS on the Xperia Z. An NFC chip allows the tablet to play nice with the NFC-capable speakers and accessories, as well as allowing wireless display mirroring with Sony's new range of NFC-toting Bravia televisions.

Even though the Tablet Z does not boast the same high-resolution screen of the Samsung-manufactured Nexus 10 or the Retina display of the iPad, it beats both tablets with a waistline measuring 6.9 mm. It is also lighter than Google and Apple's flagship tablets with a weight of about 495 g. Another unique feature and a first for Sony tablets is the debut of the company's S-Force Front Surround 3D technology. Usually reserved for Sony's high-end televisions, this technology emulates a 3D sound field allowing users to enjoy full surround sound with only two front speakers.

According to Japanese website Blog of Mobile, Tablet Z will feature a 6000 mAh battery and is expected to ship with Sony's in-house power optimisation software or Stamina mode as seen on the 2013 Xperia phones.

The Japanese model, which will be available in Black and White colours, will support LTE; however, there's no indication from Sony whether this will be carried over to other international variants if and when they will be announced. The company is yet to announce the pricing and availability of this slate, but February's Mobile World Congress could be the stage for a worldwide announcement.

Here's why the iPhone 5 is the best gaming phone



Best gaming phone? Maybe even best gaming handheld. All the iPhone 5's improvements may not trump the Vita and 3DS' hardware yet, but it's getting awfully close.

Back before the iPhone 5 was a known quantity, back before we even knew it was definitely going to have a larger screen, the iPhone was already a great gaming handheld. Millions of people know that. Gamers may hate to admit it, because the iPhone lacks physical buttons. It doesn't matter.
What the iPhone did to mobile gaming has reverberated across the industry, forcing the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita into catch-up mode, battling for second and third place. Free-to-play and the very concept of redownloadable gaming apps -- not to mention the rebirth of indie development -- can all be traced to Apple's App Store and this little handheld device.

How does the iPhone 5 compare as a gaming handheld? It's the best Apple's ever had, but it may be the best any phone maker's ever made, too.That's not to say the iPhone doesn't have a few issues. Its lack of physical buttons and that smaller screen began to feel cramped compared with the latest handhelds from Nintendo and Sony. Physical buttons or no, the screen of many iPhone games can become riddled with virtual, cluttered button dashboards. Some elegant games bypass this, but many don't.

Screen: size and shape
The iPhone 5 has a big thing going for it: a larger, longer screen. Sure, it's not Android big. However, it's the length that matters. That 16:9 new screen finally matches the aspect ratio of an HDTV, and that means that games in landscape mode finally look right.

It also means that your thumbs do, indeed, have more room. When playing games like FIFA 13 and Galaxy on Fire 2, both of which use a lot of onscreen buttons, those controls get pushed off more to the sides, leaving a bigger chunk of screen real estate uncluttered. It's unnerving at first; if you've played a lot of iPhone games like I have, your thumbs will freak out at the extra room. You won't have a clear sense of where the edges are.

But, once you get used to it, the controls seem even more instinctive. In FIFA 13, I found myself making shots and passing efficiently, even without physical buttons to feel for. That might be because the edges of the screen are pushed out, making it harder for your thumbs to accidentally slide off and hit off-screen.
Galaxy on Fire 2 had similar advantages. The extra room in the middle that isn't obstructed by your fingers isn't as massive as you'd think, but that extra half-inch or so amounts to a more normal-feeling field of view in virtual button-happy games.

For more-minimal interfaces like in the game Lili, the impact's even stronger. Other games, like platformers or endless runners, offer more visibility (see Jetpack Joyride, above).
The iPhone 5's 4-inch screen isn't as large as the screen on the PlayStation Vita (5 inches), but it finally feels like a real gaming handheld versus a phone you're playing games on. It's not as big as most typical Android phones, either, but it's more compact to hold.

Going vertical
Vertically, the iPhone 5 isn't quite as ideal for games. Titles like Spelltower now have more rows of tiles, but one-handed games are a little harder to play with only a thumb; spanning the iPhone 5's screen is possible, but it's not quite as easy as it was before. I don't think the extra screen height makes a huge difference in vertical games, unless you're playing something like Tetris.

Still, adding a row or two of extra letter tiles in Spelltower or residential floors in Tiny Tower (above) isn't anything to sneeze at. Certain games will find clever ways of taking advantage of an extra-long vertical screen; others will just use it as a way of horning in extra banner ads.
What do I think this means? I expect a lot more iPhone 5 games in landscape mode, taking full advantage of the extra space for virtual buttons or expanded screen view.
Graphics, speed
That's just screen size: obviously, the faster A6 processor and graphics soup up the load time and graphic polish on games, too. It's hard to judge how games perform thus far, but titles that seemed to push the limits of the iPhone 4S have no problem whatsoever on the iPhone 5. FIFA 13 is far smoother on the 5. I'm looking forward to the next generation of iPhone games that take further advantage of the graphics possibilities.

Lili is one of the few games specifically timed to the release of the iPhone 5; it stands as one of the showcase graphical experiences right now, alongside FIFA 13, which performs better but isn't quite as easy to appreciate from a casual distance. Games load faster by a matter of a couple of seconds, and resuming a game left open on the app dock happens more seamlessly than on my iPhone 4S.

Better grip, lighter device
Were previous iPhones too hand-cramping in landscape mode? Is a longer, lighter iPhone a better handheld gaming experience comfort-wise? I think this is hard to tell, but the longer iPhone 5 definitely keeps your fingers from crowding the device as much as they did previously. The reduced weight and thickness make for a more compact hand feel, and I preferred it over the iPhone 4 and 4S in two-handed landscape-mode gaming.

There is one caveat: games that aren't iPhone 5-optimized still work reasonably well, but the pillarboxing that occurs on the sides (the black bars) in landscape mode makes searching for controls a little more difficult, especially if you've been adjusting to your longer-screened iPhone over a period of weeks. Seen above, Infinity Blade II (which still has black bars). It's something that's not hard to adjust to, and most games will be iPhone 5-optimized sooner than later.
A superior online experience
Of course, the best part of the iPhone-as-game-console remains its social connectivity. Both its always-on design and the wide variety of online social networks the iPhone 5 connects to (Facebook, Game Center, OpenFeint, others). Game Center may be largely an afterthought, but if you're a socially-networked mobile gamer, you're making your home on the iPhone. The library of titles and sheer selection is staggering.
That massive App Store
Android has lots of games, and many developers are piling on. It still can't touch the breadth and depth of what the App Store offers iOS users, especially in terms of games. Ever since Infinity Blade, there are a growing number of "graphics showcase" titles that continue to push the frontier. Meanwhile, plenty of cheap, compelling indie games are available every week. It can get numbing to keep track of, and the App Store doesn't help much on the discovery front. Then again, the price of admission is often so low that it's not much of a risk to just buy a game and see how it is. iPhone 5-optimized games are growing at a steady rate, although there isn't a clear search filter to find them. Still, you can easily make the argument that iPhone games are the new frontier for handheld games, no matter what quality titles emerge on the PlayStation Vita and Nintendo 3DS.

The new iPod Touch
The iPhone 5 isn't the only iOS device that has a larger screen. The fifth-generation iPod Touch, available in October, has the same extended display, but it's a Frankenstein-esque combination of the iPhone 4S and 5 internally, with an A5 instead of an A6 processor. The clean design and hand strap could be a plus for lots of people, but the types of games that emerge on the new Touch may not be quite as impressive, graphically speaking, because of the different processor. Starting at $299 for a 32GB model, it's also not any less expensive than a subsidized iPhone 5.
Ever since I bought an iPad, the amount of iPhone gaming I've done has settled down to a few casual puzzlers, mainly because of the smaller screen. The new iPhone makes enough important adjustments that I've swung back again. And I may finally be more accepting of virtual buttons, even though I still wish there was a universal control pad case.

SAMSUNG UPDATES GALAXY NOTE 10.1 AND GALAXY TAB 2 TO JELLY BEAN

Galaxy Note 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 2 will be happy to learn thatSamsung (005930) has begun to update their tablets to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The company announced its plans earlier this week, revealing that the Note’s update includes “dramatic improvements to the multitasking and S Pen features,” while the Tab 2 will bring the company’s Premium Suite of features and productivity apps to the device. The addition of Jelly Bean will also give the tablets access to Google Now, Google’s (GOOG) personal assistant feature, and improved performance with Project Butter. The update is available now for Wi-Fi models of the Galaxy Note 10.1, Galaxy Tab 7 and Galaxy Tab 10.1.

iPad Readers Guaranteed First Access to Some Hearst Magazines

iPad owners are now getting more than just bells and whistles tacked on to some of their favorite magazines — they're also getting issues of those magazines first.
As first uncovered by The Loop, Apple has set up a new category in its Newsstand store featuring 20 titles — all owned by Hearst — which will be released before they appear in print "or any other digital edition." Subscribers and single-issue purchasers will be able to access new releases at the same time.
Exactly how much of a lead iPad readers will have will vary by magazine, but most will be within "a couple of days" of the print release, a spokesperson for Hearst told Mashable.
Apple's advantage here isn't so much over print as over other digital newsstands, like Amazon's, Google's and Zinio's. Many magazines owned by companies other than Hearst already push out their digital editions ahead of print: The tablet edition of Conde Nast-owned Golf Digest, for example, goes live one week before print issues hit newsstands, a spokesperson for the magazine told Mashable. (However others, likeRunner's World, sometimes appear several weeks after, we've noticed.)
Why is Apple getting special treatment? Apple suggested it, says Hearst. The advantage for Hearst, presumably, is exposure. At Mashable's Media Summit in November, Hearst President David Carey said the success of its tablet editions relied heavily on promotion from digital storefronts. "If your magazines land in the upper carousel of [Apple's] Newsstand, you sell a lot of product. If you're nowhere on that page, you're not going to do as well," he observed.
Hearst's digital circulation is still marginal. In a note to employees sent at the beginning of the year, Carey said the company had amassed nearly 800,000 paid digital subscribers in the U.S. across its titles. To put that in context, just one of its titles,Cosmopolitan, has a print circulation of more than 3 million, according to ABC.

iPhone 5 SPIGEN SGP Slim Armor Case

The product according to the manufacturer has been designed to protect the iPhone 5 at every angle with improved shock absorption all the way round the edge of the handset. It is constructed with a double layer with a TPU case, along with a polycarbonate hard case to offer even more protection.

Owners can remove the polycarbonate part of the case that then allows it to be interchanged with different colour finishes, and the case fits snugly onto the iPhone 5 to still give a nice sleek and natural look. The middle part of the case has also got a matte finish to improve grip in use as wells as provide a soft touch.

We have embedded a number of videos below that show off the Armor iPhone 5 case and the first one is just a quick preview of the handset being placed easily into it, and showing off the various openings for the handsets functions. The next video down goes into more detail about the case and the fact it’s not supplied with a screen protector, but the low $17.99 asking price may have something to do with this.
The video continues by showing you how easy it is to install the iPhone in the case, but does mention that a screen protector is advisable as well. The next video again talks about installing the case onto the iPhone 5, and states you can either have both pieces of the case together before placing the handset inside, or you can first put the device inside the main body of the case before putting on the back polycarbonate shell.

Again owners are advised to use some kind of screen protector as even with the case on there is no protection for the iPhone 5’s display and the final video also comments on how cleanly the cut outs have been done for all of the handsets ports. What is 4K? Next-generation resolution explained

If you keep track of next-generation TV technology, you're going to start hearing a lot more about 4K or Ultra HD. Here's what it is and why it exists.


As if LED and 3D TV weren't confusing enough, in the last few months we have seen a new HDTV technology called 4K, or its official name, Ultra HD. It's being heralded as the next high-def, and judging by the show floor at CES 2013, manufacturers are lining up to bring you a new array of products.
But just as was the case with 3D, it's the hardware chicken before the software egg: there's no consumer 4K content available. Still, if you listen to the industry, it'll tell you it's the last resolution you'll ever need. So what is 4K anyway, and what makes it different from high definition?

Digital resolutions: A primer

The latest in a line of broadcast and media resolutions, 4K/UHD is due to replace 1080i/p (1,920x1,080 pixels) as the highest-resolution signal available for movies and, perhaps, television.
Though there are several different standards, "4K" in general refers to a resolution of roughly 4,000 pixels wide and about 2,000 pixels high. That makes it the equivalent of four 1080p screens in height and length. Currently 4K is a catch-all term for a number of standards that are reasonably close to that resolution, and the TVs we'll see this year labeled 4K will actually be Ultra HD, which is defined below. But frankly, we think 4K is the catchier name.
Meanwhile, high definition (HD) itself has been with us for about a decade and is used in Blu-ray movies and HD broadcasts. There are three versions of HD: full high definition 1080p (progressive), 1080i (interlaced), and 720p (also called simply "high definition").
Most television programs and all DVDs are encoded in standard definition (480 lines). Standard definition is the oldest resolution still in use as it began life as NTSC broadcasts, switching to digital with the introduction of ATSC in 2007.

The beginnings of digital cinema

The roots of 4K are in the theater.
When George Lucas was preparing to make his long-promised prequels to the "Star Wars" movies in the late '90s, he was experimenting with new digital formats as a replacement for film. Film stock is incredibly expensive to produce, transport, and store. If movie houses could simply download a digital movie file and display it on a digital projector, they could save a lot of money. In a time when cinemas are under siege from on-demand cable services and streaming video, cost-cutting helps to keep them competitive.
After shooting "The Phantom Menace" partly in HD, George Lucas shot "Attack of the Clones" fully digitally in 1080p. This was great for the future Blu-ray release, but the boffins soon found that 1080p wasn't high-enough resolution for giant theater screens. If you sit in the front rows of one of these theaters as it's displaying 1080p content, you may see a softer image or the lattice grid of pixel structure, which can be quite distracting.
The industry needed a resolution that would work if the audience were sitting in the optimum "one-and-a-half times the screen height" from the screen or closer, and found it required that resolution to be higher than 1080p. The Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) was formed in 2002 with the goal of setting a digital standard. Based on these efforts, two new resolutions came about: a 2K specification, and later in 2005, the 4K format.
The first high-profile 4K cinema release was "Blade Runner: The Final Cut" in 2007, a new cut and print of the 1982 masterpiece. Unfortunately, at that time very few theaters were able to show it in its full resolution. It would take one of director Ridley Scott's contemporaries to truly drive 4K into your local cineplex.

Despite the industry's best intentions, there is still no single 4K standard -- there are five or more different shooting resolutions available. In cinemas, you see projectors based on the DCI specification.
In August 2012, the Consumer Electronics Association attempted to clarify the situation for the home by introducing the term Ultra High Definition defined as resolutions of "at least 3,840x2,160 pixels". However, the next day Sony muddied the waters by saying it was going to call the technology "4K Ultra High Definition".
The HDMI organization recently added two types of 4K support to its latest 1.4 specification: the former "Quad HD" (strictly 3,840x2,160 pixels) and 4K/2K, also called 4Kx2K (4,096x2,160 pixels). While only Quad HD conforms to the classic 16:9 ratio of modern television screens, both Quad HD and 4K/2K qualify as "Ultra High Definition".
Meanwhile, some industry experts have questioned the necessity of 4K as a home format, given the lack of content and the need for very large displays to appreciate the extra resolution.
"There was a huge, noticeable leap from standard definition to HD, but the difference between 1080p and 4K is not as marked," said researcher Dave Lamb of 3M Laboratories.
Lamb added that "4K is at the point of diminishing returns," but there could be some benefits for screens over 55 inches.

Did you see James Cameron's "Avatar 3D" in the theater? Then you've seen 4K in action. Cameron's movie about "giant blue dudes" helped drive high-resolution 4K Sony projectors into theaters around the world, and made a lot of money in the process. Movie studios keen to maintain that momentum have released a slew of 3D films -- mostly converted from 2D -- and continued the expansion of 3D cinemas.
However, this forward motion hasn't translated to a success for 3D TV in the home.
"Manufacturers would have wanted 3D to be bigger than it was; they wanted it to be the next LED, but it didn't work out," Lamb said.
Given a so-far-mediocre response to 3D, and the expense and bulk of active glasses, manufacturers have begun to search for an alternative, and 4K offers a way increase the quality of the 3D image with passive glasses or get rid of them altogether.

In-home 4K, now and the future

The 4K TVs will be big and expensive for the next couple of years.
Most companies have committed to releasing 4K displays in 2013, and in the absence of 4K media to watch, the main benefit would seem to be the enhancement of 3D quality. Theresolution disadvantages of LG's passive 3D system can, in theory, be overcome by doubling the number of horizontal and vertical pixels, allowing 4K passive displays like theLG 84LM9600 (due this summer) to deliver 1080p to both eyes.
The first consumer-grade 4K panel to hit the U.S. market was the LG 84LM9600 that features a UHD resolution of 3,840x2,160 pixels and currently goes for $17,000. Meanwhile,Sony's 84-inch XBR-84X900 TV will set you back 25K. More TVs will be coming your way in 2013.
Sony announced its 4K home-theater projector, the VPL-VW1000ES, in September 2011, but does not make the product available through its Web site or stores and instead sells it directly to custom installers. Meanwhile, JVC announced four projectors in 2011 that upscale 1080p content to 4K but currently are unable to display native 4K content.
In the absence of 4K content, players and displays will need to upscale 1080p or even standard-definition content. To this end, Sony has a Blu-ray player, the BDP-S790, that will upscale to 4K. Sony has also announced it will bundle a movie server that has 4K films stored on it with its X900 TV.
Looking to the future, Sony is reportedly keen to have the forthcoming "Spider-Man" reboot become one of the first 4K Blu-ray movies, and is apparently in talks with the Blu-ray Disc Association to finalize the specification.
Tim Alessi, director of home electronics development at LG, said he believed that such a development was not only inevitable but also potentially valuable.
"I do expect that at some point [4K] will be added [to the Blu-ray specification]. Having that content in the home is what the average consumer will want," Alessi said.
Just when we thought we had it all covered, 4K may not even be the final word in resolution. Japanese broadcaster NHK was the first to demonstrate 8K in 2008, and at CES 2012 there were industry murmurings -- and at least one prototype -- devoted to higher-than-4K resolution.

Conclusion

Will the extra resolution offered by 4K make movies better? You could argue that it depends on the format of the original film. For example, "The Blair Witch Project" and "28 Days Later" were both shot with standard-definition camcorders, and there would arguably be little extra benefit to buying either movie in a 4K native format over a DVD -- depending on the quality of the scaler in your brand-new 4K screen, of course.
Even with reference-quality native 4K material, however, a 4K-resolution TV or projector won't provide nearly the visible improvement over a standard 1080p model that going from standard-def to high-def did. To appreciate it you'll have to have sit quite close to a large screen -- sort of like being in the front few rows of a movie theater.
But whether it's 4K or 8K, you can bet that manufacturers haven't run out of cards when it comes to trying out the next "must-have" feature in the coming crops of televisions.
