Nexus S and Motorola Xoom to remain on Android 4.1.2

While announcing the availability of Android 4.2 on AOSP, lead Android developer at Google Jean-Baptiste Quéru confirmed that the Nexus S and the Motorola Xoom will not be updated to Android 4.2 and will remain on Android 4.1.2.
We honestly can't say we didn't see this coming. Both devices, the Nexus S in particular, had started struggling while running the newer versions of Android, with their antiquated hardware unable to properly run the new software that is clearly designed for more powerful devices.
Still, both had a good run. The Nexus S was launched with Android 2.3 and since then has seen two major updates. Same goes for the Xoom, which was released with Honeycomb and received ICS and Jelly Bean afterwards.
It's worth noting that both devices are currently running a newer version of Android than many Android devices launched in the last six months, even though both have been around for close to two years now. While it does tell us that Google has been quite committed to updating its own devices, it also tells us how messed up the Android update situation is on non-Nexus devices.

Apple Knocks Out Android in Mobile Security [INFOGRAPHIC]

You could be carrying a virus with you everywhere you go. This new strand doesn’t target the immune system, but rather the operating system — on your smartphone.

Smartphone usage has skyrocketed over the past few years. There are now more than 1 billion active smartphones, or one for every seven people on the planet. Because of their immense popularity, smartphones have become a main target for nefarious hackers looking to spread malware and steal personal information.
The main avenue for viruses to infect smartphones is through third-party apps. There are over one million apps combined for the two most popular mobile operating systems, Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS.
Many hacked apps, often made to look like popular apps, are rigged with malware. More than 90% of the top-selling Android and iOS apps have hacked versions available for download on torrent sites and other unofficial platforms, according to a study by Arxan, a mobile security company.

Up to this point, Apple seems to be doing a better job protecting its mobile users against cyber threats. The iPhone has never seen a virus, and its only spam app was removed. Conversely, 75% of smartphone malware targets Android devices, according to F-Secure.
One probable reason hackers target Android over Apple is that the former enjoys a much greater share of the smartphone market. More than 50% of all smartphone users employ the Android OS, while Apple’s market share is closer to 30%. With far more people using Android devices, a virus has the ability to do much greater damage.

Nokia to Offer Its Maps for iPhones and Android Phones

Nokia still hasn’t found its way to a successful comeback in the smartphone market. But the company is hoping to get its tentacles into competitors’ phones through mapping applications, a move it hopes will help it improve its maps.
Nokia’s Here app for iOS includes voice-guided walking navigation and public transportation directionsThe company said on Tuesday that in the coming weeks it would release a maps app called Here in Apple’s App Store. It will be a free download for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch owners. Nokia also said it would release a toolkit for programmers to make Nokia-powered mapping apps for Android phones. And it is forming a partnership with Mozilla, the browser company, to develop location features for its new operating system, called Firefox OS.
Nokia has emphasized the power and thoroughness of its mapping database, which has information on 200 countries, in an effort to distinguish its new Lumia smartphones from the competition. For instance, when Apple’s new maps system turned out to have some embarrassing lapses, Nokia published a blog post that compared its maps with Apple’s and Google’s and, of course, concluded the Nokia maps were better.
But Nokia’s Lumia smartphones haven’t sold very well. So why give away its secret sauce to rivals?
Stephen Elop, chief executive of Nokia, said in an interview that in order to ensure that its mapping platform stays competitive, it needs lots of users. The more people who look up directions or search for locations on its maps, the smarter the system gets. And Nokia can still build exclusive location features into its Lumia phones, he said.
“For the location platform to be at the highest quality, one needs scale, and you need as many different people contributing as possible,” Mr. Elop said. “Of course, Nokia will build apps, some of them unique to Lumia devices, that gain a competitive advantage for Nokia.”
He said that, for instance, current Lumia phones use an app called City Lens that enables users to point the camera at real-world objects and see data overlaid on top of them on the screen. Pointing the camera at a restaurant pulls up online reviews for it. That feature will not be available in the apps for other phones.
If Nokia’s mapping app for the iPhone is released soon, it could beat Google to the punch. Apple’s maps app previously used Google’s mapping data, and now Google is reportedly developing its own iOS maps app.
Nokia’s Here app for iOS includes voice-guided walking navigation and public transportation directions — features that Apple’s maps app lacks. And Mr. Elop noted that a particular feature that iPhone owners using the Now app might enjoy is offline support. A person can specify that he spends most of his time in New York, for example, and download the maps in advance so that location searches can be done more quickly, or even in areas with no cellphone reception, like in a subway tunnel.
“Many people have stared at their map waiting for their tiles to download for some time,” he said. “We’re able to put that computational mapping data onto the devices, so that’s a significant improvement.”
Nokia also announced that it had agreed to acquire Earthmine, a mapping company based in Berkeley, Calif., that specializes in three-dimensional maps showing street views. It said it expected the deal to close by the end of the year. Doug Dawson, a Nokia spokesman, declined to say how much the company was paying for Earthmine.

HTC details Jelly Bean update, 512MB RAM phones not invited

HTC finally shed some light on the Jelly Bean update roll-out and compatibility. Unfortunately there are several devices that won’t get the Android 4.1 treatment and will be stuck on Ice Cream Sandwich forever.
According to HTC devices with 512MB RAM or less are incompatible with Jelly Bean and won’t be updated. Just like Sony said a while ago, HTC believes the Ice Cream Sandwich provides better user experience than Jelly Bean. This means the One V and Desire C are out of the loop already.
They won't be the only ones either. HTC is prioritizing the Jelly Bean development on devices released within 2012. When it's done with them, the company will consider releasing Jelly Bean for some of its 2011 phones. Not to be but it is highly unlikely.
There is still no info on when the first global Jelly Bean updates will come, but the roll out for the One X and One S has already started, so we guess the others shouldn't be that far either.

Android 4.2 update now rolling out for the GSM Galaxy Nexus

Right on the day of the Nexus 4 launch, Google has started rolling out the Android 4.2 update for the Galaxy Nexus.
Currently, only a few users have reported receiving the update, and none of them are using the Sprint or Verizon versions. If you have the GSM variant, preferably the "takju" variant you are most likely to receive the update.
Post update you will be treated to all the new 4.2 features, including Photo Sphere mode, Gesture Typing, multi-user mode, notification settings, Daydream, Miracast sharing, improved Google now and other performance and stability updates.
Eventually we believe the update will be rolled out to all the users but if you're impatient, you can download the update by following this link to Android Police. Just make sure you read the instructions carefully.

Surface users report Touch Cover splits and audio issues

Surface split touch cover

Microsoft's Surface RT tablet has been available for just two weeks, but users are starting to notice some early issues with the device. We noted in our original Surface review that performance was a little hit or miss, but there now appear to be widespread reports related to audio problems. Several threads on Microsoft's support forums detail issues relating to random muting and audio stuttering while the Surface is in use or on standby.
The Verge has noticed these issues on several Surface units and has reported them to Microsoft. The company is investigating the problems, but has not yet confirmed it is able to reproduce them. A report in The Guardian notes that Touch Cover users are reporting some hardware issues too. A number of users have spotted that the Touch Cover edge appears to be fraying, exposing the wiring of the cover. The Verge staff has a unit with the defect and Microsoft is shipping a replacement free of charge to affected users. A Microsoft support person admitted that the company is dealing with "a lot" of Touch Cover returns.

Apple and HTC reach global patent dispute settlement, agree to ten-year licensing agreement

Apple and HTC have announced that the two companies have reached a global settlement regarding the two firm’s multiple patent infringement lawsuits. The agreement is on a global-scale and includes a ten-year licensing agreement. All current lawsuits have been dismissed.
TAIPEI, Taiwan and CUPERTINO, California—November 10, 2012—HTC and Apple® have reached a global settlement that includes the dismissal of all current lawsuits and a ten-year license agreement. The license extends to current and future patents held by both parties. The terms of the settlement are confidential.
“We are glad to have reached a settlement with HTC,” said Tim Cook, CEO of Apple. “We will continue to stay laser focused on product innovation.” Peter Chou, HTC’s CEO, said “HTC is pleased to have resolved its dispute with Apple, so HTC can focus on innovation instead of litigation.”
Apple’s March 2010 suit against HTC was its first against an Android manufacturer (Samsung and others would follow) and was in direct response to the HTC-built Nexus One gaining multi-touch support exactly one month to the day earlier. Apple’s suit alleged 20 separate patent infringements relating to the iPhone’s user interface, underlying architecture and hardware.
At the time Steve Jobs said:
“We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it. We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.”
Apple CEO Tim Cook is seen as a more moderate, less temperamental leader who remarked recently that he was willing to put Android lawsuits behind Apple.  HTC had counter-sued Apple with patents it had licensed from Google as well as other patents it had picked up from S3. In a recent ruling att he ITC, all but one of Apple’s patent claims against HTC were dismissed.

Wikipedia now has new HTML 5-based video player

The hugely popular online encyclopaedia, Wikipedia, and its sister sites, now have a new video player, as per an official blog post. It is no rocket science now to gauge that with a new video player, the content on the online encyclopaedia will only grow richer, thereby making educational videos available to more people, in more languages and of course, for free.
Wikipedia Logo is the cover
Offering support for closed captions in multiple languages

Elaborating upon the recent changes, Guillaume Paumier, Technical communications manager, shares that the new video player is the same HTML 5 player used in the Kaltura open-source video platform. The video player has been integrated with MediaWiki, the software that runs Wikimedia sites such as Wikipedia through an extension called TimedMediaHandler. In essence, the new video player replaces an older Ogg-only player that has been in use since 2007.

As for the new video player, it supports closed captions in multiple languages. The new video player is based on HTML 5, and it plays audio and video files on wiki pages. Among other things, the new video player brings to the table features such as advanced support for closed captions and other timed text. The new video player allows contributors to transcribe videos; it is being considered to be a significant step towards accessibility for hearing-impaired Wikipedia readers. Even captions can easily be translated into many languages, creating more room for the potential audience.

TimedMediaHandler, as has been elaborated comes with support for the royalty-free WebM video format, making it possible to seamlessly import videos encoded to that format, such as freely-licensed content from YouTube’s massive library.

“Even further behind the scenes, TimedMediaHandler adds support for server-side transcoding, i.e., the ability to convert from one video format to another, in order to deliver the appropriate video stream to the user depending on their bandwidth and the size of the player. For example, support for mobile formats is available, although it is not currently enabled,” adds the post further.

The 'Share' feature on the new video player offers a short snippet of code to directly embed videos from Wikimedia Commons in web pages and blog posts, as is the case here.

The post goes on to reveal that some features provided by TimedMediaHandler have been available to users of Wikimedia Commons during development, in experimental mode. This enabled registered users to turn on the beta features in their personal preferences to enjoy a nicer interface and edit subtitles. Since the new player is compatible with existing subtitles created during that time, there is an existing body of captions that it can already load and display, like on this mash-up of interviews of Wikipedians.

"On the internet, video is a very static medium: it rarely changes once uploaded. In contrast, the success of Wikipedia relies on numerous volunteers constantly editing and improving each others contributions. Appropriate tools will hopefully reduce this dissonance, like Kaltura’s sequencer, which empowers users to remix videos directly online. Successfully translating its radically collaborative nature to multimedia content will be critical to Wikipedia’s transition into the age of video," the post reads.

Safari: iOS 5 vs iOS 6 (μεγαλύτερο σημαίνει καλύτερο)
Richards: 488 vs 1154
Deltablue: 373 vs 711
Crypto: 559 vs 1629
Raytrace: 577 vs 996
EarleyBoyer: 617 vs 915
Regexp: 197 vs 330
Splay: 535 vs 675
NavierStokes: 612 vs 681
pdf.js: Unsupported vs 454
Mandreel: Unsupported vs 693
GB Emulator: 616 vs 1114
CodeLoad: 2591 vs 4012
Box2DWeb: 776 vs 1602

icloud

Web Browsers

MICROSOFT MAY HAVE MESSED UP THE SURFACE’S TOUCH COVER KEYBOARD DESIGN

Microsoft Surface Touch Cover Keyboard Flaw

As solid as the build quality for Microsoft’s (MSFT)Surface tablet is, the same can’t be said for its magnetic Touch Cover keyboard. Users are reporting on various outlets and forums that the $119 keyboard cover accessory is literally bursting at its seams, exposing the wiring where it attaches to the Surface tablet, according to The Guardian. It’s too early to say Microsoft has a serious Touch Cover problem on its hands, but as The Guardian points out, the issue has popped up in many instances in the United States and the United Kingdom, which leaves it to believe the problem is not an isolated case. For what it’s worth, users have also reported success in getting immediate replacements at Microsoft Stores, which speaks to the company’s ambitions of emulating Apple (AAPL) and its hundreds of retail stores. A few photos of the bursting Touch Covers follow below.

Android Gingerbread, ICS most vulnerable to malware

Over the past couple of years, the Android platform has amassed a lot of popularity, and most of the best smartphones in the world are running on it. However, since its growth in popularity, the platform has also been notorious for attracting malware. A recent study by Kaspersky Labs has found that the most popular targets for cyber criminals were Android devices running version 2.3.6, commonly referred to as Gingerbread, and Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich.

According to the report, Analysis of mobile malware for Android OS by Kaspersky Lab experts in Q3 2012 revealed that the most popular targets among cyber criminals were the aforementioned Android versions.
Cover
Gingerbread and ICS most vulnerable to malware

The report stated that the rapid growth in the number of new mobile malicious programs for Android continued in the third quarter, prompting the specialists at Kaspersky Lab to identify the platform versions most frequently targeted by cyber criminals. Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread accounted for 28 percent of all blocked attempts to install malware, while the second most commonly attacked version was the new 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, which accounted for 22 percent of attempts.

“Although Gingerbread was released back in September 2011, due to the segmentation of the Android device market it still remains one of the most popular versions, which, in turn, attracts increased interest from cybercriminals,” commented Yuri Namestnikov, Senior Malware Analyst at Kaspersky Lab. “The popularity of the most recent version of the Android OS – Ice Cream Sandwich – among virus writers can be explained by the fact that the devices running the latest versions of the OS are more suitable for online activities. Unfortunately, users actively surfing the web often end up on malicious sites.”

The research note states that more than one half of all malware detected on user smartphones turned out to be SMS Trojans, i.e., malicious programs that steal money from victims’ mobile accounts by sending SMS messages to premium rate numbers.

The OpFake family has become the most widespread (38.3 percent of all the malicious programs detected for Android) among all the mobile malware families. All the programs in this family disguise themselves as OperaMini. A fifth of the malicious programs detected (20 percent) on user devices are versatile Trojans, most of which belong to the Plangton family. After being installed on a device, these Trojans collect service data on the mobile phone, send it to the command server, and wait for the cyber criminals’ commands. Specifically, malicious programs in this family can stealthily change bookmarks and the home page. Third place in the ranking was taken by the FakeInst family, whose members pretend to be installers for popular programs (17 percent). These two types of malware are mostly distributed via so-called alternative app stores created by cyber criminals.

The report ends by stating that mobile threats of this kind can be neutralised with the help of dedicated mobile applications such as Kaspersky Mobile Security and Kaspersky Tablet Security.

With the popularity of the Android, the number of hackers and malware targeting it has grown too.

Hands-on demo and speed tests of new Apple Mac Fusion Drive (video)

TLDToday put together a neat hands-on demo video of Apple’s new Mac Fusion Drive in a new Mac mini. The video walks through how the Fusion Drive is seen as a single volume in OS X. The drive’s speed is also compared to a 5400 RPM hard drive, and the speed tests do seem to live up to the benchmarks that Apple reports for the drive.

The Fusion Drive is currently available for the Mac mini announced in October and will also be available for the new iMacs coming in November and December. We recently noted that adeveloped enabled the functionality on an older Mac. The drive is a combination of both Flash and a traditional hard drive, providing the main OS and your most used files with the fast, efficient Flash experience, while also providing users with either 1 or 3 terabytes of hard drive storage for other data.

Apple Explores Internal Fans For Mobile Devices, Headphones That Are Also Speakers

apple-earpods
Apple had a couple of new patent applications published by the USPTO today (spotted by AppleInsider), including one detailing howinternal fans could be made to fit mobile devices to help dissipate heat, and another forheadphones that become speakers for when listening goes from private to shared scenarios, which even describes how in-ear models could work that way.
The patent for internal fans includes a design that combines device physical feedback along with cooling powers to save space compared to when those components are separate. In one permutation, there’s also a design for taking air in through existing holes like a headphone or connector port, and expelling excess heat through the same mechanism. That would also help with space-saving efforts.
In terms of its likelihood for actual use, I’d guess that it probably won’t be employed in a shipping product, but instead represents one line of Apple’s thinking about how to cool mobile devices, but not the one they ended up spending much time on. The more logical path seems to have been to work on processor efficiency, which Apple is clearly committed to with its in-house processor design and engineering efforts.
Headphones that do double duty as external speakers is a much more practical and likely invention, looking at Apple’s product release history. It describes methods for turning both external on-ear type headphones into speakers with rotating ear cups, and ways to make even in-ear headphones like Apple’s own EarPods into speakers powerful enough for multiple people to enjoy. The headphones in all cases can detect their orientation, and even their proximity to a user’s ear to determine in which mode they should be operating.
Apple is clearly still interested in evolving its headphone design, since in introduced the new EarPods alongside the iPhone 5. And external speakers for iOS devices are consistently strong performers in terms of accessory categories. The main concern would be quality: making drivers small enough but powerful enough to sound good at any decent volume would be a significant engineering challenge.

Apple takes a cue from users, invents packaging that doubles as iPhone/iPad dock

A number of Apple patents and applications have been published today, one of which details an interesting new design for the packaging of iOS devices that would also double as a stand or dock of sorts. The patent application was originally filed in May 2011, but published today by the United States Patent and Trademark Office and detailed by PatentlyApple. The image above is pretty self-explanatory, showing iPod nano-like packaging with a removable lid and base that transform into a dock or stand for the device. It appears the dock would act as a permanent solution, with the image above showing room to accommodate a charging cable as well as small parts to hold the device snugly in place.

This is actually something we’ve seen before. Although many iPhone and iPad users have no problem dropping a decent amount of money on a dock, there are no shortage of users who have come up with innovative ways to turn the current iPhone and iPad packaging into a dock and or stand for free.

Microsoft Office for iOS tipped for March, Android due later

Viewing and editing Microsoft Office documents on a smart phone is every child's dream, and now it looks like that dream may have a release date. The much-anticipated Office apps for iOS and Android have been tipped to land in the first few months of 2013 -- although it seems Android fans may be kept waiting a little longer.
The Verge cites "several sources close to Microsoft's plans", who reckon the software will arrive for iOS devices in late February or early March, while the Android edition is scheduled for May -- two months later.
That could prove a frustrating delay for fans of Google's green robot, but developers have been known to take longer to get Android apps out the door.
The BBC, for example, blames device fragmentation, among other factors, but you'd hope Microsoft would have the clout to release apps simultaneously across platforms. We'll just have to wait and see.
The upcoming Office apps will reportedly let you ogle Word, PowerPoint and Excel documents, though to do so you'll need to sign in using a Microsoft account. Even then there's no editing allowed unless you purchase an Office 365 subscription.
Office 365 subscriptions come in several different flavours, but the 'small business' edition that gives you web-based document viewing and editing costs £4.25 per month, so it's possible that's how much you'll be asked to fork out to use these new apps.
It's reckoned you'll be able to buy a subscription from within the app, so at least Microsoft would be making it convenient to deprive you of your hard-won cash in exchange for tinkering with files from your phone. It's not expected that editing will be as fully featured as the regular ol' desktop version of Office.
It's hardly the most exotic software on the horizon, but for the millions of people out there who use Android or Apple gadgets and rely on Office for work, this could be a life-saver -- even if Microsoft's charging you or your company for the privilege.
