LovePalz: Το απόλυτο gadget για sex εξ αποστάσεως! [Video - NSFW]

[Video]

New MySpace

Apple iPhone 5 vs. Samsung Galaxy S3 vs. HTC One X: The cameras

Here's how the iPhone 5's camera stacks up against a couple of its Android competitors.

(Credit: Sarah Tew/CNET)

Apple didn't do much to the iPhone's camera from the 4S to the 5. Then again, it didn't really have to.
The iPhone 4S has one of the best cameras on a smartphone, and with some improved processing and other enhancements, the iPhone 5 does now, too. But it's not the only mobile device with a good camera built in, with the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S3 offering up some strong competition.
All three devices use an 8-megapixel backside-illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor.

Basically, the benefit of BSI CMOS sensors over regular CMOS sensors is that their design allows more light to reach the photo diodes, which means less light is needed to get a properly exposed photo. The result is better low-light photo quality. (Keep in mind, though, that just because they all have the same sensor type, doesn't mean the sensors are of the same quality or the image processing will be identical.)
To further help out in low-light conditions, all of the models have large apertures; the iPhone has an f2.4 33mm lens, the Galaxy S III has an f2.6 27mm lens, and there's an f2 28mm lens on the One X. Brighter lenses let in more light, so there's less of a need to use higher ISO sensitivities that introduce noise and kill detail.

All three of the cameras have very good shooting performance with no or low shutter lag and fast shot-to-shot recovery, so you're never really left waiting to take the next shot.
Shooting options are pretty basic for the iPhone 5 with no controls over things like ISO or white balance, but you do get HDR and the new panorama mode. The Samsung and HTC, on the other hand, are closer to using a standalone point-and-shoot, with different scene modes and more control over results (though I doubt these things will matter to most people) and they, too, have HDR and panorama modes that essentially work the same as the iPhone's.

I hesitate to pick an overall winner here -- my time shooting with all three was brief -- but when it came down to picture quality, the iPhone 5 regularly produced excellent photos regardless of lighting. The One X is a pretty close second, however, turning out photos with nice color and detail. The Galaxy S3 turns out very good pictures, too, but they're not as usable at larger sizes as the iPhone 5's. (You can take a look for yourself in the slideshow above.)

iPhone 5 outperforms Samsung's Galaxy S III in display test

A comprehensive side-by-side examination of the Apple and Samsung flagship smartphones was performed by display testing firm DisplayMate Technologies, which found the iPhone 5's 4-inch Retina display to be more refined than the OLED unit found in the Galaxy S III.
DisplayMate's "Flagship Smartphone Display Technology Shoot-Out" not only pitted the iPhone 5 against the Galaxy S III, but added in the iPhone 4's Retina display to show how Apple's display technology has advanced over the past two years.

The test consisted of numerous tests covering screen reflections, brightness and contrast, colors and intensities, viewing angles, display power consumption and effect on battery life.

"Apple has uncharacteristically understated how much better the display is on the iPhone 5 – something that could be an important factor for those considering whether to upgrade," said DisplayMate's Dr. Raymond Soneira. "In every category that we measure (except Brightness Decrease with Viewing Angle), the performance of the iPhone 5 display has improved over the iPhone 4, sometimes by a bit and sometimes by a lot."

Compared to the iPhone 4, the iPhone 5 has decreased screen reflectance by 52 percent, boosted contrast by 57 percent and improved color accuracy. Soneira notes the iPhone 5's display calibration is very good and, while suffering from minor gamma intensity, that "It is still probably more accurate than any display you own, unless you have a new iPad."
Display Test

Source: DisplayMate Technologies

Highlights from the iPhone 5 test:
[…] it is the Brightest Smartphone we have tested in the Shoot-Out series, it has one of the lowest screen Reflectance values we have ever measured, it has the highest Contrast Rating for High Ambient Light for any Mobile device we have ever tested, and it’s Color Gamut and Factory Calibration are second only to the new iPad. What are the downsides? The White Point is still somewhat too blue like most Smartphones, and at Maximum Brightness it has a shorter Running Time than the iPhone 4, which is not surprising since it has a larger screen and a larger Color Gamut but roughly the same capacity battery.

As for Samsung's Galaxy S III, the device's PenTile display performed admirably, but the OLED technology the screen leverages is still being perfected and is not up to par with the LCD tech used in the iPhone 5.
Overall Assessments

Highlights from the Galaxy S III test:

The Brightness is about half of the iPhone 5 due to power limits from the lower power efficiency of OLEDs and concerns regarding premature OLED aging. The Color Gamut is not only much larger than the Standard Color Gamut, which leads to distorted and exaggerated colors, but the Color Gamut is quite lopsided, with Green being a lot more saturated than Red or Blue, which adds a Green color caste to many images. Samsung has not bothered to correct or calibrate their display colors to bring them into closer agreement with the Standard sRGB / Rec.709 Color Gamut, so many images appear over saturated and gaudy. Running Time on battery is less than the iPhone 5 due to the lower power efficiency of OLEDs, even given that the Galaxy S III has a much larger battery capacity and much lower Brightness.

Overall, the iPhone 5 scored an "A" rating while the Galaxy S III earned a "B+" on poor calibration and viewing angle issues.

iOS 6 gives iPhone 3GS another year of life support

Apple is no longer selling its iPhone 3GS from 2009, but iOS 6 gives the device another year of usability, despite lacking support for some of the newest features.
When Apple debuted the iPhone 3GS at its June 2009 Worldwide Developer Conference, it played up the third revision of the iPhone as faster (thanks to its new Cortex-A8 APL0298C05, which one might retroactively name the "A3," with twice the RAM of previous models), a better 3MP camera (finally delivering video capture), and support for HSDPA wireless networks up to 7.2 Mbps.

Three years and three months later, and despite being discontinued from Apple's iPhone lineup, the iPhone 3GS is still supported by the newly released iOS 6, making it officially the longest supported smartphone capable of running a modern OS.

This is in stark contrast to rival smartphones introduced alongside it just over three years ago: the entire range of Windows Mobile 6.x devices, Palm's webOS Pre and Pixi, RIM's Blackberry 5.x lineup and all hardware running Google's Android 2.0 Eclair are not just unsupported today by those platforms' latest releases, but were in all cases not even supported through the first two years' contract life of those devices. That situation isn't changing either, with Google, Microsoft and RIM's platforms all gearing up to provide their new releases exclusively on new devices.

What iPhone 3GS gets in iOS 6

According to a report by ArsTechnica, while "the iPhone 3GS actually gets most of the new OS's tweaks and refinements," it found that "the new features also don't slow the phone down appreciably."

That's an improvement over Apple's previous releases of backward support. iOS 4 was particularly notorious for heaping too much on the plate of previous devices, resulting in many users complaining that they were better off not upgrading. Since then, Apple appears to have worked hard to keep older devices from being negatively impacted by new software updates, paring down backwardly supported features when necessary.

Apart from new iOS 6 features including Do Not Disturb, Safari enhancements including iCloud Tabs, Passbook, Facebook integration and Sheets sharing, Camera exposure lock, shared Photo Streams and numerous updates to Mail and other bundled apps, there are a few missing features on the iPhone 3GS upgraded to iOS 6: the processor intensive new 3D Maps and Flyover, Turn by Turn Navigation and Panorama camera capture are probably the most significant.

Other iOS 6 features unsupported on iPhone 3GS including Safari's Offline Reading List (likely due to its limited RAM) and support for new "Made for iPhone" hearing aids (also a hardware issue).

There's also no new support for previous iOS features that the iPhone 3GS never previously got, ranging from Siri to FaceTime to HDR photos. On the other hand, not even the year newer and significantly faster iPhone 4 supports iOS 6's new Navigation, Flyover or Panorama, nor does it support Siri or Cellular FaceTime (due to missing hardware support for those features).

"iOS 6 doesn't make the iPhone 3GS any slower or more difficult to use than it was before," Ars observed, "which should be good news to anyone who keeps theirs around as a secondary or backup phone—indeed, it's pleasantly surprising how many of the refinements and improvements make their way down to Apple's oldest-supported piece of iOS hardware."

Unparalleled backward support

Apple's three and counting years of software support for the iPhone 3GS is the longest run of any iOS device, and far longer than other smartphone platforms.

Shortly after Apple released the iPhone 3GS, it shipped its last update for the original 2007 iPhone, giving it right at three years of updates. By the end of that year it delivered its last update for the 2008 iPhone 3G.

This year's last update to iOS 5 was also the end of the line for the 2010 iPad (which is about a half a year newer than the iPhone 3GS. This means that in general terms, iOS devices have gotten two major new updates after their release version. The iPhone 3GS got three major updates, extending its functional life past four years, an eternity in the tech world.

Being qualified for a major update is pretty rare under Android, with only some of the top selling new handsets ever getting a single major update after their release. A range of new Android phones continue to ship with Android 2.x, which was released in 2010 alongside iOS 4. Samsung's flagship Galaxy S III is just now getting the latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean release in some countries, despite it being released months ago.

The situation for Android doesn't appear to be getting better. At the end of 2011, half of the installed base was on the year old 2.3 Gingerbread while another 35 percent were still on 2.2 Froyo from mid 2010. Just 11 percent were still running something older than the year and a half old Froyo release. Today, Google reports that less than 23 percent are on the year old 4.0 ICS or newer, while 57 percent are on Gingerbread (which is now older than Froyo was last winter). Over 18 percent of active users are on something older than the nearly two year old Gingerbread.

Google promised to improve the software release fragmentation on Android, but these numbers do not indicate progress but rather some pretty significant regression. Additionally, Google's clearly articulated commitment to delivering 18 months of updates for new phones has been ignored by its licensees, few of whom have released any major software updates for phone models that are just a year old.

Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 similarly abandoned all support for existing Windows Mobile 6 devices a year ago with the release of the all new Windows Phone 7, and this winter's Windows Phone 8 will do the same thing to existing WP7 owners. Nokia's Symbian, RIM's BlackBerry OS and HP's Palm webOS have also rarely offered any significant software updates for their existing owners, particularly for phones more than a few months old.

Apple's easier task of supporting existing hardware

Why is Apple making a free update for a more than three year old phone? For one reason, it's easier for the company to backwardly support its installed base because there were only three major models of iPhone released over the last three years, and only a couple hardware variants for specific carriers.

Apple also intentionally made supporting the iPhone 3GS easier by giving it a forward thinking design. It was fast enough, had enough RAM and was build with the experience of two previous iPhone generations.

Other smartphone hardware makers often focus on the low end with devices, commonly lacking enough RAM to support even a single new major update. Other mobile platforms also support lots of different sub-models from a variety of competing vendors, with many specific to a particular carrier. And the mix of models from a single hardware maker, such as Samsung, LG or HTC, often changes several times within a year.

All these hardware designs are also typically designed independently from the software platform. That's why Google's new partner Intel just released a new smartphone (RAZRi) saddled with Android 4.0 ICS, which is already a year old, despite having based the "new" model on an existing design, and having coordinated with Google's own Motorola subsidiary to bring it to market.

Similarly, Nokia's latest announcement of its new WP8 Lumia lineup was hamstrung by delays related to Microsoft's new software release. A year ago, Nokia experienced similar coordination problems with Microsoft after attempting to launch a simplified version of its N9 configured to run WP7 instead of Meego Linux.

Certainly Apple would also have a tough time of supporting iOS on previous devices if it had to manage backward support for a wide range of licensees and their broad product offerings. The unsuccessful history of Mac OS licensing bears that out.

Apple has greater reason to supporting existing hardware

A second major reason why Apple extended support for iOS back to the iPhone 3GS is that there are a lot of iPhone 3GS users, and Apple wants them on the latest iOS release to give its App Store developers the largest installed base possible for its new OS.

In addition to awarding users with a software update that gives them new bells and whistles and typically faster Safari performance, Apple's backward support in iOS enables developers to target the latest release, knowing that will allow them to reach nearly the entire installed base out there.

It also helps to inspire confidence in developers considering whether to support new APIs and features such as Passbook or third party routing in the new Maps. If only the newest models (or only future models) were ever going to get iOS 6, a large number of developers would simply wait around for the new release to gain enough popularity before targeting it.

That fragmentation is a big problem for Android, where according to Google's own figures, 75 percent of smartphone users and the vast majority of tablets are running a version of Android 2.x that is now two years old. Why would developers target the new Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for custom development when just 1.2 of active users visiting the Google Play store have it installed?

Conversely, when developers have to reach backward to older OS platform releases, they not only can't use new features, but also must test against old versions of OS code with known bugs and limitations. Google faces that problem with its own Android Maps app. It simply can't target only the latest Android 4.1 release without losing 75 percent of the installed base of Android users. So it must track development of its Maps to old versions of Android.

In contrast, Apple's new iOS 6 Maps only works on iOS 6, so it can take full advantage of new features in iOS 6 and not worry about old issues that were fixed in the new release. That not only streamlines the company's software development, but allows Apple to recommend that third party developers aggressively target route integration support for iOS 6 Maps as well.

Apple's control over the whole widget also means that it can shift how the OS works across the board without creating too many problems. Two examples in iOS 6: the addition of new Advertiser ID policy in replacing UUIDs (giving users the ability to opt out of ad network tracking), and the third party rollout of the new Maps (all third party apps on iOS 6 now automatically use Apple's maps servers, and they don't need to update their apps to do so. There is one notable exception to this: Apple's own iPhoto continues to use a nonstandard map for geotagging that is neither Apple's new service nor Google's, an oddity apparently related to the offset release schedule between iPhoto and iOS 6).

Pushing ahead strategic platform goals with generous backward device support is not new to iOS 6. Last year, Apple pushed out broad support for features including Game Center, Notification Center, iCloud and AirPlay, helping to ensure that a critical mass of users were able to take advantage of the new features. These examples illustrate how Apple's efforts to support older devices gives it more power to actively shape future development on its platform.

Apple to begin taking iPhone 5 Personal Pickup retail reservations in US tonight

While customers in international countries can already place a one-day reservation to get their hands on the iPhone 5 at an Apple retail store, the capability is set to come to the U.S. beginning tonight.
Pickup

Apple's retail employees have begun informing customers that Personal Pickups for iPhone 5 orders will begin this evening at 10 p.m., AppleInsider has been told. Customers will be able to purchase their iPhone 5 online, and stores with inventory will hold the purchase for pickup the next day.

Retail Apple stores across the U.S. are said to have begun receiving shipments of new iPhone 5 units on Monday that will be held for customers to reserve through the Personal Pickup program on Tuesday. One customer was told that the reservation program in the U.S. will be accessible via the iPhone 5 page on Apple's website.

An announcement about the policy change was reportedly made internally to Apple's employees on Monday. Word then began spreading as the day went on.

For now, Apple's website still says that iPhone 5 purchases are available on a first-come, first-served basis. In contrast, customers in other countries, such as the U.K., have the option to reserve an iPhone 5 and pick it up the next day at an Apple retail store.

U.S. customers who reserve and purchase their iPhone 5 will reportedly have just one day to pick up their purchase. If they do not, they will lose the handset and their money will be refunded.

50% of Consumers Value a Brand’s Facebook Page More Than Its Website [INFOGRAPHIC]

If you’re debating the power of social media for branding, here’s more proof that it matters: About 50% percent of consumers think a brand’s Facebook page is more useful than a brand’s website, a new study suggests.
Market research company Lab42 — which surveyed 1,000 social media users about how they interact with brands on Facebook — found that consumers are viewing a brand’s Facebook presence as more important than ever.

In fact, about 82% of respondents said Facebook page is a good place to interact with brands. But one of the top reasons to follow a brand on Facebook is to print coupons and discounts. The study revealed that 77% of those who “Like” a brand on Facebook have saved money as a result.
Consumers (73%) also noted that they have no issue with un-Liking a brand on the site if they post too often.

AuthenTec to reportedly ditch non-Apple customers in 2013

Fingerprint sensor maker AuthenTec on Monday reportedly notified existing customers that it will not be offering its security technology to the companies starting next year, causing a "state of panic" as the firms scramble to find comparable replacements.
In an email to its customers, which includes Samsung, HP, Dell, Lenovo and Fujitsu, Apple acquisition AuthenTec reportedly said it will no longer be honoring orders come 2013, a source told Korean language website etnews.

The announcement may be an indication of what Apple plans to do with the company and its technology after purchasing the firm in July for $356 million. AuthenTec is well known for its work in fingerprint sensor tech and it was rumored that Apple might be looking to implement the biometric security asset into an upcoming iPhone.

A filing with the U.S. Security and Exchange Commission in August hinted at an advanced piece of hardware dubbed the "Smart Sensor" was key to Apple's acquisition. The sophisticated component goes further than simple fingerprint scanning by acting as a full-fledged touch pad controller, allowing UI navigation with one finger. The sensor is also capable of identifying different fingers which can be associated with certain tasks, like opening the phone app with a thumb or sending an email with a forefinger. One of the first companies to use the specialized part was Fujitsu with its Regza smartphone.

Before the iPhone 5 debuted on Sept. 12, rampant speculation pointed to inclusion of AuthenTec's sensors as part of a possible augmentation of Apple's Passbook app, which stores digital coupons, tickets and gift cards. The rumors turned out to be just that, however, as no biometric devices were found in the unit's teardown.

While it remains unclear what Apple plans to do with AuthenTec's IP, for now the Cupertino company seems content in leveraging its new purchase to disrupt rival manufacturers' plans for fingerprint-based security.

Kim Dotcom: Megaupload Is Almost Back

Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom says — well, tweets, at least — that the next incarnation of his legendary file hosting site is almost built.
In January, Dotcom was arrested in New Zealand on a request by American authorities, who want him extradited to the States to stand trial for copyright fraud. Megaupload was also shut down for encouraging online piracy. Dotcom, who for many has come to represent the tension between defenders of online intellectual property and advocates of free and open file-sharing, has teased Megaupload’s return almost since his arrest.
But he recently gave his most detailed update yet with this tweet:

What exactly a Megaupload reincarnation will look like remains to be seen, of course. In a piece he wrote for the website TorrentFreak last December, Dotcom discussed a new venture called “Megabox.com, a site that will soon allow artists to sell their creations direct to consumers and allowing artists to keep 90% of earnings.” A pair of Dotcom tweets in August also implied that Megabox and a new Megaupload would both hit the web by the end of 2012.

Dotcom has been active on Twitter over the past several months as the Megaupload drama has slowly played out. He’s used the social network to provide cryptic updates like the ones mentioned above, push his argument against prosecution and share random bits of inspiration and advice.
Actively remaining in the public eye via the web is very much in keeping with Dotcom’s character. Originally named Kim Schmitz in Germany, he founded Megaupload in 2005. The site quickly gained extreme popularity with Internet users and launched him into geek-world celebrity along with drawing the ire of law enforcement officials.

As he gained notoriety, Dotcom — who tips the scales at a reported six-and-a-half feet tall and nearly 300 pounds — was never shy about flaunting his largesse. He posed for photographs with scantily clad women, participated in international auto races and paid for a lavish New Year’s fireworks display in Auckland, among other pursuits. SexDistance Is A New Web Service That Offers, Well, You Know

Screen Shot 2012-09-24 at 3.38.22 PM

Every once in a while gag sites pop up in our email that make us chortle lightly and say “Sure, we’ll bite.” To wit: SexDistance.com allows you to see, ummm, how far you go when you have intimate relations with another person. You feel me? You see where this is going?

To use it you enter your, ummm, length and effort expended in the achievement of great justice. The service then calculates how far the old rook took the queen, as they say in the world of competitive chess.
The creators, who remained anonymous, noted that the service can be used to measure:
Past or current relationships’ covered distance,
Last time’s covered distance,
Last summer vacation total distance,
Marriage’s sexual life quality measured by the distance covered instead of only the number of intercourses as a means of quality assessment,
Personal lifetime distance,
Below you will note my own back of the envelope calculations for a trip I took to Spain once (not really).

No word on business model but they’ve got some ads up there and heck, everyone loves them some sex-themed web services, right? Right?

Share of iOS Safari, Chrome browsers grow as Google updates app for iPhone 5

Google on Monday rolled out an updated version of its popular Chrome iOS web browser, bringing the multi tab-friendly experience to iOS 6 and more specifically the iPhone 5's 4-inch display, while Apple's own Safari gained over two percent share in iOS browser market.
When Google's app was first introduced in June, Chrome for iOS was thought to be the first legitimate contender to Apple's built-in Safari web browser, however it seems interest in the mobile browser has cooled with adoption rates showing only a moderate increase over the past two months.

Chrome for iOS

Initial adoption of Google's app was high, taking 1.4 percent of the iOS browser market in less than one month as a number of users were eager to try out the software's speed and much-touted compatibility with its desktop counterpart. Chrome's unique features like multi-device syncing won some critical acclaim at launch, however Safari in iOS 6 now offers the same functionality with iCloud Tabs.

Chrome Tabs

As of this writing, usage data from mobile advertising firm Chitika pegs Chrome adoption at 2.1 percent, with growth coming at the expense of other iOS browsers, not Safari, which actually gained an additional 1.2 percent market share.

The rise in Safari usage could be a result of iDevice owners upgrading to Apple's iOS 6. Earlier on Monday, CEO Tim Cook announced that over 100 million devices had installed the new operating system since its debut less than a week ago.

Chrome is available as a free download through the iOS App Store.

Despite statements from Facebook to the contrary, users are still claiming to see private messages in their Timelines

Facebook has been accused of inadvertently publishing private messages on users’ Timeline profiles from the years 2007, 2008, 2009, and possibly even earlier. The issue was first reported by Metro France, but soon reports from all over over started to flood in. Facebook has denied the claims, saying the posts in questions are indeed old Wall posts, but readers are saying otherwise.
A quick check with my The Next Web colleagues around the world shows that this issue isn’t happening to everyone. At first it looked as if English-speaking countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada were not affected, but a closer look seems to show this isn’t necessarily true. At least one reader from the UK says it is happening to them as well.

It’s thus very possible this privacy screwup has nothing to do with where you are, as Facebook sometimes tests (and breaks) things with randomly-selected users. That being said, the reports first started in France, and Anna Heim, one of our reporters from France, confirmed that she is seeing the problem.

Samsung Galaxy S III with Tizen OS

Apple announces sales of 5M iPhone 5s, 100M iOS 6 upgrades for opening weekend

Apple just posted a press release announcing debut iPhone 5 sales topped 5 million units sold since going on sale on Friday and pre-order Sept. 14. The Cupertino-based company also announced 100 million iOS devices are now running iOS 6.

CEO Tim Cook noted, “While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date.”

Apple had sales of 4 million iPhone 4S last year in the opening weekend. It is clear Apple could have sold many, many more iPhone 5s had it been able to supply more units. Apple will spend the coming months trying to catch up to demand, and the numbers for the quarter will likely indicate what Apple can make and not what it can sell.

Leading up to the weekend, Apple announced record pre-orders for the device with approximately 2 million sold before even going on sale.
The full press release is below:
CUPERTINO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Apple® today announced it has sold over five million of its new iPhone® 5, just three days after its launch on September 21, and more than 100 million iOS devices have been updated with iOS 6, the world’s most advanced mobile operating system. iPhone 5 is available in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and the UK, and will be available in 22 more countries on September 28 and more than 100 countries by the end of the year. Demand for iPhone 5 exceeded the initial supply and while the majority of pre-orders have been shipped to customers, many are scheduled to be shipped in October.
“While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone.”
“Demand for iPhone 5 has been incredible and we are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone.”
iPhone 5 is the thinnest and lightest iPhone ever, completely redesigned to feature a stunning new 4-inch Retina™ display; an Apple-designed A6 chip for blazing fast performance; and ultrafast wireless technology*—all while delivering even better battery life.**
Pricing & Availability

iPhone 5 comes in either white & silver or black & slate, and is available in the US for a suggested retail price of $199 (US) for the 16GB model and $299 (US) for the 32GB model and $399 (US) for the 64GB model. iPhone 5 is available from the Apple Online Store (www.apple.com), Apple’s retail stores, and through AT&T, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, select Best Buy, RadioShack, Target and Walmart stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers. iPhone 4S is also available for just $99 (US) and iPhone 4 is available for free with a two-year contract.***

PRICE IN INDIA

We’ve seen quite a few innovations in the world of mobile accessories from strictly basic Bluetooth enabled headsets going from Mono to Stereo (A2DP) to a variety of corresponding gadgets from jewellery to sports equipment. For Sony and it’s previous iteration, Sony Ericsson, there has been a certain fascination with wrist based tech, i.e. watches.

The company has been experimenting and consolidating with watch manufacturers for a long time to design and offer Bluetooth enabled accessories for its handsets. Fossil was one such big name watchmaker who has worked with Sony Ericsson in the past. Its wristwatches were Bluetooth powered and had little head up displays to show users that they had missed calls and messages waiting on their phones. Since the tIme of Dick Tracy, the phone watch has been something that only LG managed to design well enough and produce with its GD910 3G enabled device.

Sony’s SmartWatch might not be what the famous detective would have opted for, but we were curious to see just how useful a wrist “informer” would be in today’s hectic mobile scenario.

Form Factor
It features a 1.3-inch OLED display with multitouch capabilities and a 128 x 128 pixel resolution. It’s not as large as the GD910 and if your forearms are large, it’s going to a look a little small. The display itself is mildly scratch resistant, but we urge you to be a little careful nonetheless. We're concerned about it being water resistant, and it's not. So again, it's somthing you'll need to be careful with.
Clip it to your shirt
Clip it anywhere

The rubberised strap is comfortable enough, but if you’re using it during a workout session, then the sweat can make it a little difficult after a while. Like the iPod nano, it is also a clip based device so you could wear it anywhere else. It can be connected and charged via a proprietary USB port placed at the bottom. A power/sleep button is on the right hand side where you’d find most watch buttons.

Connecting the SmartWatch
It’s a simple mode of Bluetooth (3.0) connectivity. The SmartWatch is also compatible with a wide range of devices from Sony as well as other brands. We tested it on a Galaxy Nexus and it worked just fine. Click here for a full list of compatible device. Check out the list carefully if you’re intent on purchasing the gadget, as it only works partially with some handsets. Connecting the SmartWatch to an Android phone is simple and involves installing a couple of applications. The steps are shown in the video below .

Features and Performance
Interface
The UI is simple and neat. It’ll take you a little while to learn the gestures for swiping over to the apps or the widgets that you install. It’s a pretty seamless process for most part, but a few of the apps like the GPS Maps take a little while to load. The gestures are nevertheless quite simple with a simple double tap with two fingers to come back to the home screen.
Sony SmartWatch - Simple UI
Simple UI

The icons are a little small but easy to access. What could be considered an issue is the lack of any settings on the device—even those as simple as adjusting the screen brightness.

Functionality
While in some aspects the device seems a bit redundant, it does manage to provide some worth to it’s concept. For instance, it accesses your phonebook for caller ID on the display so you can avoid answering incoming calls from unknown numbers or those from your mistress, if you’re wife is around. The same goes for messages. You can read the messages quite easily on the display and even choose to call up the sender from the watch.
Sony SmartWatch - Wear it anywhere
Get social network updates

In cases like this, it would have been a much better option to simply have a handsfree socket on the handset that would actually allow you to take or make a call right from the device while it accesses your handset like any good old Bluetooth headset.

There are plenty of apps, including ones for Twitter and Facebook, that show you the latest updates and posts. The music player app also lets you control your media. However, this is also easily managed if you’re using a handsfree with controls attached. Again, if this had an earphone, it would have been a much better scenario to work with.

There are those like Endomondo’s Sports tracker, a calendar to remind you of schedules and appointments and even a calculator, all of which are very handy. VFinder lets you use the display as a viewfinder for your phone's camera. It has a bit of Nanny-Cam style feel but it’s painfully slow and doesn’t let you actually take pictures. However, some of the paid apps like Camera Click also allow you to capture pictures. Needless to say, thanks to the dedicated apps for the gadget, you can get quite a bit of functionality out of the SmartWatch.
Sony SmartWatch - The basic tones
A funky piece of tech

Battery
With heavy usage, i.e. plenty of incoming calls and messages, accessing apps frequently, you’ll get about 10 hours of usage before the battery goes completely dead. That’s not too bad but we did expect a little more.

The Bottom Line/Price in India
The price tag on Sony’s SmartWatch Accessory is Rs. 6,299, which is in a little bit of a grey area as high end accessories go. It certainly does have it’s plus points, but on the down side, it should have had an audio out option to simplify the user experience further and it could have been water resistant. This puts it a little bit on the expensive end. However, on the other hand, there’s quite a bit that the SmartWatch is capable of and I’m sure developers will continue to add more apps for support. So if you are a serious techie who loves their gadgets and gizmos, the Sony SmartWatch is a pretty good deal.

How Social Media Distracts You at Work [INFOGRAPHIC]

How often does the social media monster swallow you whole?

More than you may think, according to Red e App, which lets consumers get notifications from businesses without having to provide their personal information.
The company developed an infographic, below, that details how interruptions impact employee productivity.

“Is it possible to be too connected in this digital age?” Red e App asks. “Research data indicates, yes.”
Among the findings, the infographic shows that workers are interrupted approximately once every 10.5 minutes, and that it takes an average of 23 minutes to return to an assigned task. The impact of these interruptions is staggering — costing the American economy almost $650 billion dollars a year, it says.
The infographic then breaks down the amount of time that Facebook, Twitter and email suck out of your day.

How Do They Make Money

Facebook Anonymity Question

Όπως βλέπετε και στο παραπάνω screenshot (το οποίο έβγαλε στη φόρα ένας χρήστης του Twitter), είναι πιθανό να σας εμφανιστεί στο προφίλ σας ερώτηση σχετικά με κάποιον φίλο σας “Is this your friend’s real name?” και προσφέρονται 4 επιλογές για απάντηση “Yes”, “No”, “I don’t know” και “I don’t want to answer”.

Rode Dog

AmEx, Starbucks announce plans for Passbook integration: both live by end of the month

AmEx, Starbucks announce plans for iOS 6 Passbook integration both live by end of the month

When it launched with iOS 6 this Wednesday, Apple's Passbook mobile-ticketing feature boasted a handful of high-profile partners -- including Fandango, Live Nation, Lufthansa and Ticketmaster -- but that list still leaves plenty of room for fleshing out. According to Venture Beat, AmEx is launching integration with Passbook later today. The credit card company's Passbook functionality will include notifications for new account transactions, along with the ability to view your current balance and redeem membership rewards points. The service can also use smartphones' location to verify charges flagged as suspicious.
Starbucks, which was featured in an early Passbook demo at WWDC, also announced the timeline for its integration with the service, tweeting today that an "update is coming at the end of the month" and offering no further details.

Judging by Apple's earlier previews, Passbook will let customers pay with a Starbucks card. The coffee chain's Passbook functionality looks to be quite similar to its partnership with Square, which will be the go-to mobile payments option for non-iOS customers when it launches this fall.
